Lee Hae-Jung
Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of the study is systematic review of the published Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) on depression among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to suggest future research direction in this area.

Methods: We searched at MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PUBMED, KMBASE, National assembly digital library, KISS, KERIS, Journal of Korean Academy of Adult Nursing web site for the published articles from January 2005 to August 2010, ``Depression and COPD`` were used as keywords. Additional inclusion criteria of the articles were research design of RCT and written in English or Korean, Articles were reviewed and effect size were calculated,

Restits: Fifteen published articles were identified and were mostly published in foreign countries, Purposes of the most included articles were to determine the effectiveness of the intervention. The most frequently used intervention was pulmonary rehabilitation. Nurses were commonly involved as interventionists. The hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) was the most frequently used depression measure. The most effective intervention for depression was dyspnea management plus 24 supervised exercise (ES-4.8),

Conclusion: Even though the effects of the intervention on depression were inconsistent, individualized comprehensive approach played an important role in reducing depression of COPD patients, Collaborative approach with experts from various specialties and reconstructioning of the intervention protocols according to the characteristics of the participants are more likey to enhance the effectiveness of the intervention. More RCTs in this area are needed to provide better evidences in developing strategies to reduce depression of COPD patients.
